Security Alert – Active Shooter Preparedness

The recent armed attacks on individuals in the workplace underscore the importance of always being situationally aware of one's individual environment. One’s awareness of their personal environment cannot be ignored during the holiday season when one’s thoughts are with family, friends, co-workers and festive events. The incidence of other criminal activities such as theft, burglary and armed robbery historically spike during the holiday season.

If you see a crime in progress or if you think a crime is being committed, call 911. Describe specifically what you observed:

  • Who or what you saw
  • When you saw it
  • Where it occurred
  • Why it's suspicious

If you have information on a crime or report a theft or crime, call your local Police Department. Do you have their phone number?

If the theft or crime occurred at your facility or you see unusual activity at, notify Security. Do you have their phone number?

When you think there's something suspicious, there probably is something suspicious, so please make a phone call.

Every organization has their own individual security needs and security requirements specific to their industry. Every business should have their own emergency plan, policies and procedures in place for the safety of their employees. Consult with your Human Resources Department about their protocol in handling workplace violence, active shooters and other situations.

You may also want to consult with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security‘s website periodically for updated recommendations. Their website is at www.dhs.gov.

Click on the link to view an excellent video for active shooter situations that may be used as a training tool at www.dhs.gov/video/options-consideration-active-shooter-preparedness-video.

Enjoy the day, and:

  • Do not lose your individual sense of self awareness.
  • If you feel suspicious about an occurrence or the activities of an individual; trust your instincts.
  • If you see something, say something. React!
